Based on the true-life story of Dr. Frances Kelsey, an FDA medical officer and trailblazing woman of science. In 1961, an era before the government required scientific evidence to prove that a drug was safe, Dr. Kelsey withstood immense pressure from the pharmaceutical industry and kept the drug Thalidomide off the US market even though it was widely being used around the world. Dr. Kelsey’s actions prevented thousands of babies from being born with horrifying birth defects and laid the foundation for the contemporary drug safety and efficacy regulations that are the bedrock of the modern FDA. For her courage and integrity, President Kennedy awarded her the President’s Medal for Distinguished Civil Service.
